Property in Correlejo, Fuerteventura
The now thriving town of Correlejo on Fuerteventura’s Northern tip started life as a small sleepy fishing village. The area consisted of only a handful of buildings centred around a little square and a harbour.
Since the 1980’s Fuerteventura has been attracting tourists and their demand for year round sunshine has seen Correlejo grow rapidly as it enjoys one of the best sunshine records on the island. Correlejo now offers the holiday maker and property investors alike, a wide range of property, bars, restaurants, shops, amenities and leisure facilities. Correlejo now lays claim to being one of the most popular cosmopolitan holiday resorts on Fuerteventura, but it still retains its beauty and original Canarian charm.
The old quarter of the town is delightful and it is here where you can still find some of the original fishermen’s houses when you wonder through a labyrinth of streets leading to the harbour with tapas bars and excellent seafood restaurants. The cuisine offered here is varied and includes international influences from Italian, Spanish and English to Chinese, Thai and Indian. Local dishes include Canarian stew with typical Canarian potatoes served with a mojo sauce and the local goats cheese with cured ham makes an excellent snack or tapas.
Due to Fuerteventura’s close proximity to the African coast, the strong trade winds have been spending centuries carrying soft white Sahara sand onto the islands coastline creating some of the best beaches in Europe. Just outside Corralejo is a protected nature reserve festooned with miles of sand dunes that Fuerteventura has become famed for. The dunes spread for many miles along the east coast and the area is wild with no paths but many visitors enjoy the challenge these steep sand dunes offer whilst climbing to the top to enjoy the view of a desert landscape. This is what makes Corralejo such a paradise for beach lovers. As a bonus, these dunes will never change as no building work is allowed in this area with the exception of two small hotels.
Many believe that the name Fuerteventura originates from “Viento Fuerte” or strong wind as this island has almost constant cooling breezes and Fuerteventura is a paradise for surfers, windsurfers and sailors. Correlejo is no exception and water sports play a keen part of activities to be enjoyed in this town which include wind surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving and paragliding as well as other sports such as tennis, quad biking, mountain biking and motorcycle tours. If that all sounds too much like hard work for you, there are also glass-bottom boat trips, ferry trips to Lanzarote, jeep safaris and island tours.
The evenings in Corralejo town can be quite lively and you will often find live music and dancers in the square near the harbour.
