Fuerteventura is one island of seven that make up the Canary archipelago, located south of Spain and just west of Morocco. Along with the Azores, Madeira and Cape Verde they form what is known as “Micronesia”.
The Canary Islands contain just about every kind of landscape imaginable, from the long sandy beaches of Fuerteventura and ever shifting sand dunes of Lanzarote, to the majestic cliffs and mountains of Tenerife and misty forests of La Gomera. Although we know that they were formed by huge volcanic forces over 30 million years ago, much of their more recent history is still shrouded in mystery, in fact even the origin of their collective name is still in debate: some say they are named after the Latin canere - to sing, in reference to canary birds that are native to the islands, others claim the root is from the word canus – in reference to the large dogs that the islands were home to when the first sailors arrived, or perhaps the word originated from the Canarii tribe of Morocco. It is a debate which will no doubt continue, but one thing that does remain constant throughout all the legends and history of the area, is that the islands were so bountiful and beautiful that from their early discovery they were thought to be a Garden of Eden or Elysium.
With almost constant good weather, varied landscapes, beautiful beaches and the tax-free status of the archipelago all within less than a five hour flight of most of Northern Europe, it is easy to see why the Canary islands have had such a booming tourist trade over the past twenty years and why Canary Island Property is so popular with foreign property buyers, they are ideal for residential tourism as well as a sound property investment.
Located just off the coast of North Africa, Fuerteventura is the second biggest of the Canary Islands and has benefited from its proximity to the Sahara by having the longest golden sand beaches in the archipelago and some of the best in the world. This is the island for sun, beach and water sports enthusiasts. Not an all-night partying place like some of its neighbouring islands Fuerteventura is perfect for families and couples seeking a relaxed holiday or a new home in the sun.
The island's approach to tourism has been carefully monitored and this can be seen everywhere: there are no billboards lining the roads, and building restrictions are tight with construction limited to 2 stories for the average property ensuring that the island retains its identity.
Ideal for property investors or first time buyers the current Fuerteventura property market is far less developed than the other Canary Islands resulting in property prices that are on the whole a lot lower than the properties elsewhere in Spain.
Over the past few years the demand for Fuerteventura property has increased substantially, but property for sale in Fuerteventura still remains amongst the most keenly priced property in the Canaries and property investment opportunities still exist with new developments on Fuerteventura continuing to show excellent capital growth.
