What Are The Canary Islands?

The Canary Islands are a group of seven Spanish islands in the Atlantic ocean off the west coast of Africa. These islands are: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera. Volcanic in origin and steeped in myth and legend, they are now well renowned for their all year round balmy warm weather, beautiful scenery and friendly people. Although they share very many characteristics each Canary Island has its own individual flavour and feel.

Why Fuerteventura?

The second largest of the Canary Islands and the closest to the African coastline (with only 100km separating the 'Punta de la Entallada' in Fuerteventura from Cape Juby in Morroco) Fuerteventura has been largely overlooked in favour of the other islands such as Tenerife and Gran Canaria by the property developers and tourists alike.

This is mostly because at first glance Fuerteventura is not much to look at. Its volcanic past is still very much in evidence which can give the island an initial feel of barrenness. But, as the property developers and tourists are beginning to find out, look a little closer and Fuerteventura has a wealth of beauty and opportunity.

Fuerteventura’s largest selling point without a doubt is its coastline. On an island that is 100 km long and 31 km wide Fuerteventura boasts over 50 km of fine, white sand and 25 km of black volcanic sand with no fewer than 152 of some of the most impressive beaches in the whole of Europe along this striking coastline. Combine this with the estimated three thousand hours of sunshine a year that Fuerteventura receives and its easy to see why this is a sun worshippers paradise and an ideal place for a relaxing holiday in the sun.

The name Fuerteventura is thought to have come from the Spanish for strong wind due to the almost constant trade winds that blow across the island and its doubtful that you will find a windsurfer or water sports enthusiast that has not heard of Fuerteventura. But it´s not only the surfers who enjoy the waters here. The seas around the Canary Islands are teaming with life from Marlin, Wahoo and Tuna to dolphins, whales and sharks and Fuerteventura in particular is becoming a great favourite with fishermen and divers for the diversity and beauty in the waters around it.

People are slowly beginning to take a real interest in Caleta de Fuste, Fuerteventura and property prices although still very low for the Canary Islands, are beginning to rise to reflect this. Don’t worry though, the government, having learnt its lessons from its neighbouring islands, has put some strict building laws into place for example, making sure that no building is more than 3 stories high and as a large percentage of Fuerteventura is actually protected land you can be assured that if you buy a home with a stunning view, you will keep that stunning view.
